PhD Student in Phage-based Rapid Detection of Listeria monocytogenes

Project description

Slaughterhouse blood is rich in proteins which can be upgraded to generate high added value co-products. After the separation of the blood, it is possible to obtain hemoglobin, a protein, which once hydrolyzed, allows the bioproduction of antimicrobial peptides, in particular. Thus, this project is part of a vast research project aiming at the development of a sequential and unique process for the bioproduction and separation of antimicrobial and antioxidant peptides from slaughterhouse blood, by approaches innovative and sustainable based on electromembrane processes and pulsed electric field technologies and high voltage pulsed electrical treatment.

The objectives of this project are:
1) Separation of cruor hydrolysates and bovine and porcine hemoglobin by EDMF under low voltage pulsed electric fields following pretreatment with TEHV;
2) Characterization of samples taken during treatment (physico-chemical and peptide profile);
3) Determination of the antimicrobial activity of the hemoglobin hydrolysate fractions;
4) Test the cruor fractions on industrial meat models and evaluate their antimicrobial activity.

This project aims to study the recently developed techniques of electrodialysis with filtration membrane (EDFM) in order to have a selective separation of a growth factor rich fraction from dairy solutions. Dr Creuzenet is seeking a PDF candidate with strong expertise in bacteriology to study the mechanisms of action of Lactic acid secretions against H. pylori and enhance the study of their effects on the interactions of H. pylori with host components. Post Doctoral Fellow with Expertise in Glycopeptide Analysis

Role of surface protein glycosylation in HIV transmission.

Dr Creuzenet is seeking a PDF with expertise in glycopeptide analysis by mass spectrometry to study the role of surface protein glycosylation in HIV transmission in the department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Western Ontario (London). A proof-of-principle study has been conducted and warrants examining the glycosylation patterns of chronic vs acute virions. All recombinant virions necessary are produced in HIV biologist expert Dr E. Arts’ lab. The PDF will be in charge of purifying and processing the proteins for MS analysis and will be responsible for the MS data analyses.

Experience with MAGIC, GLYCOPAT or alternative glycopeptide analysis softwares is highly preferred. The PDF will also be in charge of studying the role of glycosylation on interactions of these proteins with various lectins and antibodies. TEAGASC PHD WALSH SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY “FutureMilk – Understanding the impact of current and future breeding and dietary strategies on the seasonality of Irish milk and the nutritional, functional and organoleptic properties of Irish dairy products” Walsh Scholarship

Background

There has been a gradual but progressive change in the diet and genetics of the Irish dairy cow across the last two decades, focused on enhancing the profitability and sustainability of Irish milk production. This has been driven in parallel with tight calving patterns sequenced to maximise the conversion of grazed grass into milk. These drivers result in a strongly seasonal milk production system which presents functional and organoleptic challenges to dairy processors when converting milk into high value nutritional and consumer based products. This project will comprehensively define the seasonal variation in Irish milk today, to better understand the implications for milk processors relative to the compositional and functional indicators, which define the behaviour of milk during its conversion to high value dairy derivatives. The VistaMilk SFI Research Centre represents a unique collaboration between Agri-Food and ICT research institutes and leading Irish/multinational food and ICT companies. The Centre is hosted by Teagasc, the national agency with responsibility for agriculture and food research, in partnership with the Tyndall National Institute, Ireland’s national microelectronics institute, the Telecommunications Software & Systems Group (TSSG) at Waterford Institute of Technology and the Insight Centre for Data Analytics (at UCD, NUIG, DCU). VistaMilk is funded by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), the Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine (DAFM) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Requirements

The Walsh Scholar will take part in wider VistaMilk Centre activities such as annual conference, relevant Masterclasses and workshops and Education and Public Engagement activities. To be eligible for consideration to enter on a programme of study and research for the Degree of PhD, the candidate must have obtained a standard of at least Second Class Honours, Grade I, in a relevant primary degree. Award

The Scholarship funding is €22,000 per annum and includes University fees of up to a maximum of €6,000 and is tenable for 4 years. Further Information This PhD is expected to start the 1 Oct 2020 and is a joint research project between Teagasc Food Research Centre Moorepark (www.teagasc.ie) and University College Cork, Ireland (www.ucc.ie). The student will be based primarily at Teagasc Food Research Centre Moorepark and will be registered at University College Cork, under the supervision of Dr. Laura Mascaraque (Teagasc) in association with Prof. Alan Kelly (University College Cork) and Dr. John Tobin (Teagasc). The successful candidate should be self-motivated with enthusiasm to develop wet-lab technical skills across a range of disciplines. They should have an interest in and aptitude for laboratory–based research.

Graduate Position in Cyanobacteria Molecular Ecology

Cyanobacteria are one of the most significant primary producers in aquatic ecosystems. They are also potentially harmful as many species produce toxin-producing blooms particularly in freshwater lakes, and the frequency of these harmful blooms is increasing. The growth of cyanobacteria is regulated by the availability of nutrients, temperature, light quality, predation and other factors, but we do not sufficiently understand the relative significance of these factors or their interactions to predict the diversity, toxicity, and intensity of cyanobacterial blooms. One of the major challenges is the availability of tools to accurately quantify cyanobacterial diversity and abundance. With numerous genome sequences available for a wide diversity of cyanobacteria, these data can be harnessed to develop more accurate molecular tools for cyanobacteria ecology.

A MSc or PhD position is available to improve quantitative PCR methods based on genome data to assess the dynamics of cyanobacteria in freshwater environments. Applicants should have at minimum a BSc degree in Biology, Ecology, Microbiology, Bioinformatics or equivalent. Experience or education in molecular biology, genomics, bioinformatics, environmental microbiology, and/or phytoplankton ecology, is preferred, especially DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, and working with UNIX, R and/or Python.

The applicant chosen for the position will be guaranteed stipend funding for the typical duration of their degree (2 years for an MSc; 4 years for a PhD), but should be competitive for external funding opportunities and will be expected to apply for internal and external funding.

This position will be co-supervised by Dr. Vera Tai (Assistant Professor at Western University) and Dr. Irena Creed (Adjunct Professor at Western University and Professor at the University of Saskatchewan). The Tai lab has broad ranging interests in the ecology and evolution of microorganisms, with a focus on using genomic and metagenomic tools and developing complementary field and lab techniques. The Creed lab is leading cyanobacteria research in Canada, Europe and Africa, using field, laboratory and computer (GIS/remote sensing) techniques. Graduate Student (MSc or PhD) in Antimicrobial Resistance

Job Description

Antimicrobial resistance is a major public health concern that risks rendering us incapable of fighting infection diseases. Contributing to the rapid emergence of antimicrobial resistance is the ability of resistance genes to spread between bacteria, a process known as horizontal gene transfer. However, there are limits to the ability of genes to be transferred between bacteria, and genes/mutations resulting in antimicrobial resistance in one bacterium do not always result in resistance in another bacterium.

Our research team uses molecular genetics, functional genomics, systems-biology, and computational biology to study complex phenotypes in bacteria. We are recruiting a graduate student (at the MSc of PhD level) to study the molecular factors underlying compatibility between bacteria and antimicrobial resistance genes. This exciting project will draw upon state-of-the-art methods in functional genomics and adaptive laboratory evolution. The preferred start date is September 2020, but this date is flexible.

Qualifications: Applicants must have a BSc degree in biology or a related discipline, such as microbiology, biochemistry, or molecular biology. Experience working with bacteria and/or analysis of high-throughput sequencing data would be beneficial; however, experience with neither method is required as we can train the successful applicant in all required skills.
